“Rules of the Road”  The Coast Guard Auxiliary in Alaska is presenting a class to teach the Nautical “Rules of the Road” addressing both the International and Inland (US) rules. The class is scheduled for March 23 and 24 at Alaska Pacific University in Anchorage and is also available via “Zoom” for those not in Anchorage.
The class is designed to help individuals expand their knowledge of the Nav Rules on a level consistent with “Captain’s License” tests given by the Coast Guard or by approved schools. The CG Auxiliary, the public, CG retirees, and CG active duty may attend. Tuition is $35.00, (which includes a copy of the official Nav Rules booklet).
Attending this class may allow students to process and retain sufficient knowledge to pass the “Nav Rules” portion of the Coast Guard Captain’s license test. Formal Coast Guard approved schools typically charge in
the range of $1,200.00 for their program and test. Pursuing a license via the “traditional” (self-study) method and testing at the CG can typically accomplish preparing for the test with expenditures of under $100.00.
The Auxiliary’s required “Nav Rules” tests for Coxswains, as well as its 3-year competency re-test, are given at
the level taught by this course, as, are many test requirements for CG Small Craft and Cutter “Deck” personnel.
Recreational Boaters can also benefit from this course by increasing their knowledge of the “Nav Rules”.
Classes will run from 0900 to 1800 on Saturday, March 23, and from 0900 to 1200 on Sunday, March 24.
